Winter weddings are often the best because it gives people a reason to come out of hibernation and celebrate a momentous occasion for two amazing people. I got the opportunity to head up to Montreal for this lovely couple’s intimate wedding where family was the focus. Individually, May and Paul have always been driven people. The business of their careers have always been a priority and it is probably because of this shared value that has made them so compatible.

What’s even more important to them is family. Balancing work and a wedding – they really had to make a tough decision on how to plan for this day. They focused and made the choice – family first. I was very flattered to be a part of this day for them. Everyone there was family and even though I first knew May as a friend, I felt like I was a part of the family. And to me, nothing beats being able to share these moments with those who welcome you with open arms.

A special thanks to who was involved that day. As an out-of-towner, it’s always great to meet people in a city where things are not always all that familiar to me. Going to Montreal has always been a fun trip and this time getting to try the food at Queue de Cheval was fantastic (and of course I have not been disappointed at all with many of the eateries in MTL =) ) I just had to include a shot of that 20 oz Bone-In Rib Eye. Anyone that knows me, knows my love for steak. And to the lovely Elena at Cheval for making sure all the details were in place and helping to make every shot was captured.

Congrats May and Paul!

Reinventing fashion always come in cycles. However, recycling and refurbishing items for new pieces has been a popular practice in the past decade due to a raised awareness of environmental factors that are leading to long term consequences for our surroundings. When I met these designers a few months back, it didn’t occur to me right at that moment how much of an impact just our choice in clothing and buying habits have on the stability of a healthy environment. I was humbled by Anne Pringle and Consuelo McAlister of Local Buttons at our first encounter regarding the story behind the refurbished vests that are made in Haiti in an effort to provide jobs for local citizens and to not waste what we have already created.

A week later, I met Julie Phelps of Jool Clothing and the concept for the shoot really blossomed. As a local designer, she has found her way of creating pieces from pre-loved items and making them new for the fashion forward individual to wear. Her actions prove that no matter where we are, we can help protect the world, one article of clothing at a time.

As the days went by, a friend heard about the theme of the shoot and recommended I get in touch with Ivan Valencia from MITZ. MITZ, an organization also doing work in other countries to help locals be paid and treated fairly at their jobs, reuses candy wrappers from M&M’S WORLD® to create these unique bags and purses for everyday use. When I got a hold of them at the shoot, I was impressed by the fantastic quality and durability of the pieces. Each bag is handmade and even signed by the worker who carefully crafted the piece.

With the help of Crystal Roy as the wardrobe stylist, she also borrowed jewelry pieces from Whimsy WonderWorks to complete the look. Vi Vien totally rocked it as usual in front of the camera (oh and did I mention she also happens to be one of the editors of Veux Mag)! This was by far the biggest team I’ve worked with and every individual had their talents that made this shoot with a strong message a success. Jem’s skillful application of makeup and Cora’s intuitive workings with hair gave us 5 completely different styles and looks. And of course, I am always in debt to Yawen for her amazing patience and perceptive eye to detail during our shoots.

It’s been a busy few weeks here at the Veux Mag headquarters. We’ve already put out our 4th issue and the 5th issue will be online and in print at the beginning of next month. Balancing a full-time job, free-lancing on the side, and being an editor of an indie fashion and lifestyle magazine has most certainly been a fulfilling experience. Mix in a little traveling here and there, this gal’s completely found happiness (or at least happiness has found me).

Here’s the latest in my travel log. I ventured out to Seoul a few months back and did a wee little article on my experience there. Check out pages 74-75.

It was a great day for this now newly wedded bride. Every detail for Wendy’s bridal shower was thought-out and beautifully done with the help of her 4 siblings (we now have an on-going joke that she and her family should start-up an event planning business). The day was filled with games and delightful treats that ranged from savory to sweet. Creative activities such as scrapbook-making and cupcake decorating gave the guests many crafts to play around with.

Congrats Wendy on your new journey in life! And what a fun shower it was indeed!

As this year draws to a close, many people will aptly write their Year in Review. Friends do it. The Times does it. And in private, many will be journaling December 31, 2011 into their notebooks. The forum that I’ve found for expressing my thoughts and ideas in the last few years have found themselves in a little spot on the internet. First it started with Friendster, then Xanga, then Facebook, and now my own blog. So allow me to be candid with you, in a not so private venue.

2011 brought many changes in my life. I grew and evolved in order to adapt and continue to define the individual that I may not have ever known I would become. The beginning of the year had me standing on a thin line between what I wanted and what I needed. I chose what I needed and gave up the comforts of an eight year comfort zone which was ironically home to more turmoil than stability. I drafted a “bucket-list” (which just keeps growing) and turned to the more literal solution of leaving home and traveling more to fill the gaps that seemed to have been empty for awhile. In doing so, I realized that the gaps were not meant to be filled, but they were meant to be motivators in pushing me forward from a static position.

Somewhere along the walk to finding another safe haven-because it is within our nature to seek protection-the middle of the year offered an opportunity to try my hand at collaborating with two wonderfully amazing and talented individuals on what has now blossomed into VEUX Magazine. I couldn’t fall back into idle mode like I’ve done in the past, so I pushed forward and pursued a project that was not only outside my comfort zone, but made me feel like a fish swimming in a puddle at times (did I mention that I can’t swim?). Since that day, the puddle has become the sea and I’ve found more excitement in venturing outwards than swimming back to land.

Then finally, the last quarter of the year called for a celebration of another kind. The kind that comes every year, on the dot, never missing a mark and can either make or break you. I exaggerate, but who hasn’t felt the pressure and profoundness of turning one year older? Turning 30 is a milestone in my book. At 29, I rolled on the floor kickin’ and screamin’ not wanting to turn older, but hey, who would’ve known that by 30, I embraced it. Who I was at 21 made me realize that at 30, I tried, I made my mistakes, I failed, and I succeeded. If turning 30 didn’t ellicit any questions of my mortality and its purpose, I’d have considered it another year wasted.

So on today, the very last day of 2011, I want to wish you more challenges, more heartbreaks, more trying, and more successes for the year of 2012. I continued to follow my passion for photography this year and found joy and love in engagements, weddings, births, and traveling. However, there are no pictures to accompany this entry. I simply want to tell you that you make your own photographs that no one else will ever be able to capture like you will. Make 2012 your year for capturing more memories that will help you to grow and evolve.
